Heart-Healthy & Fertility-Healthy Nutrition ChoicesSome wonderful reminders from the American Heart Association for heart-healthy choices. They happen to also be fertility-healthy. We're revisiting our New Year's resolutions in February to keep up all the good work going. Or to get back to it. All of these suggestions create a fertility-friendly lifestyle.

Three Heart-Healthy & Fertility-Healthy Nutrition Choices

Three tips to focus on out of the eleven that the American Heart Association suggests on getting healthier.

1. Fiber! We haven't talked about that one very much. Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT)'s Fertility Nutritionist, Carolyn Gundell, MS, reminds us to eat it rather than avoid it. Fruit rather than juice, that's an easy one. Smoothies, rarely, and making sure they are well-balanced with protein, fat and carbohydrates. If you are eating the vegetables that are suggested, in the amount that is suggested, you are likely eating enough fiber. If you're not sure, make an appointment with Ms. Gundell to go over the best, balanced food choices.Fertility Healthy Nutrition Choices

2. Be truthful- that's a tricky one. It's not that most of us lie on purpose. How big was that portion? How many nuts are in a handful? What does four ounces of protein look like again? If you're frustrated with how you're feeling or how much progress you're making in goals you've set for yourself, be scrupulous. Check in with yourself before you make choices and consider whether they are truly the ones that are best for you.


3. Graze, don't gorge. This one is kind of fun. You get to eat more, not less. At least more frequently. Healthy snacks are important and they allow you to stay more satisfied so that when meals come around, you're not famished. Many of Ms. Gundell's patients find that they actually need to eat more than they do, not less. What we eat and how much and in relation to other things is the key here.

Pressing a reset button to a healthier, more fertile lifestyle is always a choice that we can make. And it's way more effective than guilt or throwing your hands up and giving up.
