The State of Connecticut passed a bill in 2005 which passed a breakthrough legislation that requires most insurance companies to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment. On August 13, 2015 the bill was changed to clarify and restrict discrimination in benefits based on age. The Insurance Department reviewed the previous age limit and determined infertility treatment was clinically effective for ages above 40. As of January 01, 2016 insurance carriers are required to remove the age limit on infertility benefits and policies.

The law does not apply to employees in self-insured plans. Employers may also decline to cover this benefit if the diagnosis and treatment of infertility conflicts with the organization’s religious or moral beliefs.
