Becoming a Single Mother by Choice: You’ve Got a Partner in RMACT

Becoming a Single Mother by Choice

RMACT Can Help You Find Success

At RMA of CT it is our belief that a woman can successfully raise a child on her own and we support every step of the journey - from thinking, to trying, and beyond. We invite you to learn more about our Single Moms To Be Program, staffed with an experienced clinical team to help you with your family building process...including sperm donation, financial decisions and treatment options.

At Reproductive Medicine Associates of Connecticut (RMACT), we combine modern science and medicine, safe and effective therapies, and highly skilled medical professionals to become your partner on your journey to building your family.

Successfully becoming a single mother starts here

When you choose to work with RMACT to build your family, the first step is a fertility consultation with one of our physicians. Contact us here to schedule a new patient appointment at one of our four conveniently located fertility treatment centers.

Your first visit will likely last between one to one-and-a-half hours. Here is what you can expect:

  • You will meet with your physician (board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist), who will review your records, ask for any additional reproductive and medical information needed, and work with you to understand your family building goals
  • Your physician will likely recommend a physical exam and a transvaginal ultrasound
  • Blood work will be drawn to test for an array of things, including hormone levels, FSH, AMH, CBC, Hemogobin A1c levels, Vitamin D, Varicella for chicken pox immunity and rubella
  • You will discuss using donor sperm and schedule a consult with a clinical licensed social worker
  • You will also meet your Patient Care Team, which consists of your assigned fertility nurse, patient navigator and financial services representative

Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual needs and circumstances. If you are reproductively healthy, donor sperm will be used during a timed intrauterine insemination (IUI). If reproductive issues arise, your physician may recommend using oral or injectable medications in combination with IUI or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

What do I need to know about sperm donation?

There are several options for obtaining donor sperm:

  • Known Donor: A male friend offers sperm to help you become a mom
  • Anonymous Donor: Found through a sperm bank; chosen based on basic characteristics, such as race, academic achievements and looks
  • Identity Release Donor (Open Door Donor): Gives your child the option to contact the donor after turning 18 years of age

You are in control of your treatment, every step of the way. The decisions are yours to make. Your Patient Care Team will work with you to ensure you are educated regarding every option and you feel comfortable with your progress.

Is there financial support for becoming a single mother?

Each of our patients is paired with a RMACT financial representative who uses his or her expansive knowledge of medical insurance plans, benefit qualifications for fertility coverage and healthcare financing programs to help make fertility treatment as affordable as possible. Their goal is to find solutions while alleviating some of the stress associated with the finances of Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).

Additionally, many of our single patients who have an infertility diagnosis have benefited from health insurance coverage. An infertility diagnosis is required for insurance coverage. Diagnostic testing and evaluation by our medical team will help to determine a diagnosis and what treatment, if any, is needed.

RMACT Support

What support does RMACT offer me as a single mom to be?

Becoming a single mother by choice does not happen by making one decision; instead, it is a series of thoughtful decisions. Many mothers to-be find it helpful to speak with a licensed and experienced therapist who has worked with other single mothers when making these decisions. Here at RMACT, we have each single mother-to-be schedule an appointment with Director of Mental Health Services, Lisa Schuman or Melissa Kelleher, LCSW to discuss various short and long-term issues related to creating a child with donor sperm. RMACT wants you to be informed and comfortable with the unique emotional, social and psychological issues that arise when a child is created with donor sperm. Both Lisa and Melissa can help you answer questions such as:

  • Each stage of the process of getting pregnant, being pregnant, and being a new mom has its own issues—who is the person/people you can lean on and share things with?
  • Are you comfortable sharing your story openly with your child and others?
  • Are you prepared that your child will likely have questions about his/her sperm donor eventually?  About his/her possible donor siblings?

These may not be easy questions to answer. That is why we created SingleMomsToBe.com, where you can find trusted, reliable and well-vetted information about becoming a single mother by choice

To provide additional support, we have created the Integrated Fertility and Wellness Program (IFW). Our goal is to relieve some of the stress you may feel associated with fertility treatment.

Our program is designed to include activities proven to help women improve their coping skills and achieve an overall improved sense of well being while experiencing the rigors of treatment. Options include:
