"Happy" Holidays – Infertility Does Not Negate Every Happiness
Yesterday it was about the dentist. And the cardiologist, if necessary. Or the radiologist, podiatrist, physical therapist, etc.
Even in the midst of infertility. Or fertility treatment cycles. Or waiting for test results.
Today it’s about the rest of you.
Your nails. Your hair.
Your breath. (Not the dentist thing that we covered yesterday. Bringing your breath in. And letting it out. That breath.)
Your emotional psyche rather than only your physical psyche.
What Makes You Happy?
What floats your boat? Literally, what makes you feel buoyant? There are things that we do, places that we go, people that we spend time with, that lift us and make us feel lighter. That make us feel like the weight of the world, or at least of our lives, has lifted and we are more who we are than we were before.
Know what I mean?
The friend that can make you laugh until you snort water (tea, coffee, vodka) through your nose.
The walk in the woods that makes your eyes light up and your sense of self become both larger and smaller at the same time.
The work out that brings you into harmony with your body and you know you are at home there. And that it is a safe, good, healthy home.
The movie that inspires you to pick up the phone or a paintbrush or a colored pencil.
Is it lying on the couch in front of the fire, reading? (A personal favorite of mine. After a yoga class and a hike!)
Is it coming to a complete standstill because there’s a cat on your lap, a puppy leaping around, a beloved person sharing a thought with you?
Is it paying attention to the moment and then releasing it, willing to let it go because there is another moment right behind it?
Is it the manicure or pedicure? Letting yourself be pampered, fussed over and dolled up? Is it the time and money those things take and letting yourself be worth it?
A new hair style.
A new hair color.
What makes you happy?
That’s the simplest way to ask.
In this moment, this day, what makes you happy?
In this season, we say Happy Holidays a lot.
Notice the first word.
Pick something today that makes you happy and do it.
Doesn’t have to be big at all.
My happy today is writing to you.
What’s your happy today?
