Q&A  with Lisa Schuman, LCSW | Becoming a Single Mom

Q: I'm considering attending this event, what should I expect?
A: In three words, education, guidance, and support. Elaborating, I would add that there's going to be time to network with other women who are also considering becoming single moms. This is a free event where Dr. Richlin, Jane Mattes and I will provide information for the attendees on every stage of the journey.

Q: I haven't decided to become a single mom, I'm still hoping the right person will show up. Isn't this admitting defeat?
A: Knowledge is power. When you're feeling diminished and you're not sure which road to choose, having valuable information can be extremely valuable in helping you make your decision.

Q: Can't I find everything I need online?
A: The internet is a wonderful resource. However, there is a lot of misinformation out there. At this event, you will be hearing from tried and true professionals, who have been in the field for decades. We offer a well rounded perspective that includes mental health, medical information, and personal and social factors that you may have not yet considered. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions and speak with others who understand your circumstance.

Q: Will data be presented about how well children fare in a household like the one I want to create?
A: Some research on single parenthood will be presented. It is also important to know that much of the research you read on line was written by authors studying women who separated from their partners, not women who parent alone without the stressors of separation and divorce. Jane Mattes, with her decades of experience with Single Mothers By Choice will also speak and share her experience drawn from lessons she's learned from the thousands of moms that she's worked with over decades.

Q: I'm scared to come. I'm afraid of taking the next step or taking it before I am really ready.
A: All the more reason to come. You don't need to do anything, just sit and listen. If you're comfortable reaching out to other attendees or the speakers that is great but if not you are welcome to contact our speakers after the event.

Q: Should I bring someone with me? My mom/friend/sibling is interested.
A: When emotionally charged issues are presented it is very natural to feel overwhelmed and therefore, you may not absorb all the information being presented. So we encourage attendees to bring a friend, family member or partner who may pick up pieces of information you may have not heard.

Q: Is there something that I should do to prepare?
A: Come with an open mind and be ready to listen. Don't worry if you don't come with questions, you likely will as we go along. Some women will come with files and notebooks, some will simply walk in. Wherever you are on the journey to parenthood is perfect. We welcome anyone, those just starting to consider this family building option to those ready to take the next steps and become a mom now.
