Fertility Benefits of Plain, Old, Simple Walking

You want to make healthy decisions, especially when you're trying to conceive. Problem is, almost any piece of information that looks reasonable and convincing will have some other diametrically opposed bit of information that contradicts it—especially if you do a Google search! Let's cut to the chase here: healthier decisions can be simple too.

We know that walking is one of the healthiest & least complicated choices you can make. We've made walking even easier for our RMACT patients, with free pedometers. The pedometers are in honor of National Physical Fitness Month & Mental Health Awareness Month, tying together mind and body fitness for fertility health.

The best excercise while trying to conceive: walking

The bottom line?

We want you to walk. We don't want you running marathons or doing hot yoga—not while you're trying to get pregnant. But walking is a great way to stay or become active, safely. In terms of safety, please note: if you are considering making any changes to your exercise regimen during any part of fertility evaluation or treatment, please check with your doctor or clinician to ascertain whether the changes you would like to make are in line with all other aspects of your reproductive care. If you are under the care of a board certified reproductive endocrinologist (fertility specialist), there may be more specific instructions about walking during fertility treatment protocols.

Healthy Changes Can Turn On the Feel Good Hormones

Healthy changes can make a difference in your fertility and your overall wellbeing, and small changes are a great place to start. This weekend, instead of revamping all your eating habits, working out too much for the first time, or trying to catch up on missed sleep by oversleeping during the weekend, start by making a small change that can still help help your chances of getting pregnant.

If you haven't been exercising at all, and if you have permission from your doctor, make a small change by taking a 10 minute walk each day. You can walk up to three times a day, equaling 30 minutes overall if you'd like and it feels ok.

Walking is safe exercise for most people. Starting slowly and adding time is within the American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) guidelines.

Lisa has over thirty years of experience in the fertility field. After her personal infertility journey, she felt dissatisfied with the lack of comprehensive services available to support her. She was determined to help others undergoing fertility treatment. Lisa has been with RMACT for eleven years and serves as Patient Advocate and the Strategic Content Lead.

Lisa is the teacher and founder of Fertile Yoga, a program designed to support men and women on their quest for their families through gentle movement and meditation.

Lisa’s true passion is supporting patients getting into treatment, being able to stay in treatment and staying whole and complete throughout the process. Lisa is also a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist, which is helpful in her work with fertility patients.

Her experience also includes working with RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association and The American Fertility Association (now Path2Parenthood), where she was Educational Coordinator, Conference Director and Assistant Executive Director.
