Infertility is NOT a Roller Coaster - Take One Step At a Time

Infertility Support: How to Take One Step at a TimeInfertility Support

We often liken infertility to a ride on a roller coaster: up, down, swooping this way and then quickly and dramatically in the other direction.

Sometimes it's more measured than that though. Not as dramatic. One step, up or down, in front of the other.

That's why this picture.

Sometimes a rollar coaster would be relief; we could get on and take a wild ride, with no responsibility, except to sit back. There's no responsibility, no decisions that need to be made. There's no way to stop and reflect and reconsider your path. There's just a wild rush forward with lots of dips, curves and forward motion.

A Roller Coaster or Infertility?

A roller coaster would be easier than infertility. With infertility, you have to take steps. You have to think, listen, consider and make thoughtful decisions. Even when the choices are few, still, we have to make them.

We take steps forward, upwards. Sometimes we have to rest. Pause. Sometimes we have to rest for a while. Sometimes there's not the possibility of resting for long. We hold onto the bannister tight and haul ourselves up.

The steps go down too. We get into a measured pace, one step in front of the other. Steps towards our goal of becoming parents. We make the long climb, up, down, around. Not always a straight line. Our disappointments make us pause and consider.

We celebrate the steps that come easily with our whole hearts. Good test results, easy reactions to medications, helpful comments from our families and friends. We notice that the steps become easier as we grow stronger.

Our emotional bodies become stronger along with our physical bodies. We climb the steps with our thigh muscles, our backs and our joints. We also climb with our hearts and our breath.

We climb with hope. With knowing that we are on a journey where we have some measure of control, input and insight.

We are not at the mercy of a roller coaster, even when we feel like we are.

We can pause.

We can reflect.

We can take the next step forward.
